This hardy, narrow small tree (or shrub) has deep green foliage, reddish-pink when young and produces white / pink feathery flowers with fringed edges in spring / summer followed by the appearance of dark blue berries. Both flowers and berries attract birds which eat the berry (not pleasant tasting for humans). The older leaves urn a darker red making this a spectacular tree for year round interest

Category / Uses: look great in many different garden styles including cottage, seaside, formal or native and can be grown as a feature tree or just in a large pot on a balcony.

Their narrow shape makes them useful as a hedge or screening plant.

Position/ planting: thrives in sunny locations but can handle light shade. Prefers a moist well draining soil rich in organic matter, will also grow in dry sandy soils and coastal conditions.Cultivate soil before planting. Dig hole twice the width of the container. Remove plant from container and place into the hole so the soil level is the same as the surrounding ground. Water in well even if the soil is moist.

Care: mulch well to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds. Mulching will improve soil structure and ensure a cool root zone. Fertilise in spring and prune to shape as required if used as a hedge.
